2 Things To Do To Try And Break Up A Clog In Your Toilet

If your toilet isn't flushing anymore, it could be more than just a regular clog. You could be having a much bigger problem, which could lead to you ending up with raw sewage in your basement or elsewhere in your house. That can turn into a huge, horrible thing, which means that you want to do what you can in order to keep that from happening. So, what can you do?

One thing you can try is to see if you can plunge the clog out. You may have tried plunging before, but there are things that you can do that will help make your plunger work better. Those things can make the clog a little more slippery, which can make the clog slide down. What you need to do is to pour some kind of liquid soap down the toilet. It doesn't matter if it's dish soap, shampoo, or laundry detergent because the type is less important than the chemical make up. The soap has surfactants in it that will help with the clog. So, first add the soap, then add some hot water. Let that sit for a few minutes, and then try plunging again. Make sure that the flange of the plunger goes right into the drain in the toilet, and then the rest of the plunger should fit just fine over that. If that doesn't work, then it's time to move on to the next step.

Toilet Auger

These are also called toilet snakes. They have a coil-like claw at the end that you feed down into the toilet. The other end has a crank that you use to feed the snake down into the toilet pipes and then into the clog. The goal is for the coil at the end to bite into the clog. Because it bites into the clog, it should start to break it up and help it move along. When you feel some pressure as you are feeding the auger down into the toilet, that's a sign that you have hit a clog, and you should start carefully spinning the coil into and out of the clog to see if you can get everything to move. If you notice the water level going down, it's a good sign that you have started to break it up.

If you everything you have tried doesn't get your clog moving, then you should call a plumber to come in and work on the clog for you. For more information on plumbing repairs and removing clogs, contact a company in your area like Laroc Refrigeration-Metal Division.
