simple repairs for your air conditioning

Your Residential AC & Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your air conditioner turns on and off quickly without cooling down your home. This can happen for a variety of reasons, and it's important to have a residential AC repair contractor come and check out your system. Your air conditioner may be the wrong size for your home, the refrigerant levels could be low, or the filter could be clogged. In addition, the system could be shutting off because it is getting overheated when it's running. You might find ice on your condenser coils or have warm air coming out of your vents. When your system is turning on and off without changing the temperature, it's time to call for help.

The Wrong Size Air Conditioning System

If you have a mini split air conditioning installation in your home, you may have several zones in your home that are each controlled by one mini split. If you have a system that isn't designed for your large space, your air conditioner may short cycle instead of cool down your home. When you move to a home that already has air conditioning and it is short cycling, you may need to have the system assessed for additional mini splits to be installed.

Ice Buildup and Your Condenser Coils

Ice can build up because your blower stops working or because refrigerant levels are low. Sometimes the problem can be remedied by allowing the ice to melt and then turning your system back on. If there is ice on the condenser coils, your air conditioner doesn't get enough air to work properly and will shut off during a cycle. Have your refrigerant levels checked to see if this is what is causing your short cycling.

Change Your Air Filter

During periods of heavy use, your air filter can get clogged quickly. If your air filter is not letting in enough air, your system will quickly overheat. This will cause your air conditioner to shut down before it cools off your home. Change the air filter to see if this remedies the problem. If your system continues to short cycle, call a residential AC repair contractor to figure out what is going on.

When your system short cycles, check to make sure the temperature setting is on cool. If you aren't able to determine what the problem is, get the help you need by calling an AC repair technician to fix your short cycling issue.
